While smartphone shipments have declined globally, Lenovo seems to have suffered the worst.

Weak branding in the developed economies:-

Lenovo is in a very strong position in its domestic market. However, in the other developed markets, its rivals including HP, Dell and Apple enjoy a more solid position compared to Lenovo. One of the most important reasons is that in the Western markets, Lenovo has not focused on credible branding strategies. It is an innovative brand and also one of the global leaders, but in several of the developed economies, its rivals enjoy a stronger edge in terms of branding and brand awareness.

Revenue decline:-

PC and laptop sales have remained the largest part of Lenovo’s net sales globally. However, owing to the decline in PC shipments, Lenovo’s net sales each quarter have kept declining. According to Reuters, Lenovo experienced a continuous sales decline for five consecutive quarters.2 For the three months through September 2023, its sales fell 16% compared to the same period last year. Supply in the PC sector continues to outstrip demand which has been hurting Lenovo sales.

Indian smartphone market:-

The Indian smartphone market has been picking up recently. Demand for smartphones is expected to grow at a significant rate in the Indian market according to sources. Lenovo entered the Indian smartphone market years ago. The surge in smartphone demand in India presents a golden opportunity for smartphone makers. Lenovo is operating in an intensely competitive environment in the global market. One of the main reasons that its smartphone business could not flourish is because of the intense competitive pressure from the market leaders like Samsung and Apple. Huawei has also fallen out of the top five smartphone vendors. In the PC sector also, the competition from HP, Dell and Apple is intense. Lenovo is dealing with intense competitive pressure. Coupled with the other types of challenges including slumping demand, competitive pressure has hurt its bottom line.

Slowing demand in PC market:

Demand in the PC sector has kept slowing down over the past several quarters resulting in lower sales of laptops and PCs made by Lenovo. According to Gartner, Pc shipments have continued to decline for eight quarters and are expected to rise in the last quarter of 2023. It has hurt the leading PC vendors like Lenovo the most. Since Lenovo relies on PC and laptop sales mainly for a large part of its sales, the company has also been experiencing sales decline over the past several quarters. If demand continues to remain weaker, Lenovo’s business would be substantially hurt since the business has not been able to generate any other significant revenue streams to make up for the lost sales.

Regulatory threats:

Regulatory challenges are among the leading threats faced by technology businesses worldwide. Around the world, the governments have increased the security of technology businesses and how they deal with consumer data. In the US especially, Chinese businesses constantly remain under the scanner due to cybersecurity related threats. Several times, Lenovo, which is the third largest PC vendor in the US and the biggest globally, has also faced regulatory action or investigation in the US.4 However, the company has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to doing business ethically and not being a part of any government backed cyberespionage programs.

Lenovo has faced several supply chain related issues since the pandemic. Even in 2022, the company warned of shortage of PC shipments due to the shortage of microchips caused by the lockdown measures adopted by the Chinese government. Apart from the COVID related measures, the Russia Ukraine war has also hurt business and supply chain operations.
